Synopsis
Two investigators were hired by a worried college student’s mother to find her son. What they find after they break into this student’s dorm was more than odd, piles of notebooks and VHS tapes with odd footage on them…and what’s left of the student.
Thoughts
This second installment is ten times better than the original, first off. This collection of tapes was terribly, to put it lightly, fucked up. Personally, I enjoyed this movie.
The first tape they watch is about a man who gets a camera installed into his eye (lost his eye in a car accident) and starts seeing some odd things in his house. And by odd things I mean dead people. A girl tries to reach out to him and she ends up dying (shocker) and in a result to these terrifying happenings, he cuts his eye out. This first tape scares me every time. I always say that I’m not going to jump when I watch it…and I do. Great beginning to a movie.
The second tape is zombie related, yay! A man goes on a bike ride and finds an injured woman…who turns into a zombie and takes a chunk out of his neck. After turning into a zombie, him and others intrude on a child’s birthday party. People die, it’s a bloody mess, it’s wonderful. During this, he butt dials his girlfriend and she said she loved him even though she couldn't here him, so sweet. He snaps back into reality and after doing so, shoots himself. This zombie bit was pretty awesome, to say the least. This didn't scare me much, and I’m terrified of zombies.
Tape three is one of my favorites. A documentary was being made about this very odd cult, which turns out to be the stereotypical idea of a cult. After entering this mad house, a woman on the crew tells her significant other’s best friend that she is pregnant and that it’s his. She isn't far a long, but after members of the cult took her and did a ritual on her she sprang to full term size. After the head hancho made a whole long announcement/speech all hell broke loose. Everyone, including students were killing themselves…and then, you know, they come back to life. People from the crew are being killed left and right, it’s chaos. Baby daddy finds the girl, big bellied and carved into…not long after, the spawn of Satan pops out of her, large and in charge. This beast chases his dad and once he wrecks the car the beast looks over the hood of the car at him and calls him Dad. Creepy as hell, totally makes you want to go join a cult, right? I love creepy cult, weird, bloody shit like this. Freaks me out every time.
And finally, the “final” tape. This tape bothers me the most, mainly because the camera is attached to the dog and the ending for the dog is not very happy. These kids are having a sleepover, older sister is in charge (boyfriend is over, obviously) everything is fine. Then, after pulling pranks at each other and catching one kid in his “handy work” aliens show up. Apparently sex and masturbating attract aliens? I don’t know. BUT, the aliens start taking them one by one. At one point, a child and his dog are put in a sleeping bag and thrown in a lake. They manage to escape. They are all running through the woods, trying to escape, but there is nowhere for them to go. By the end the last kid was holding on to his dog as he was being lift into the spaceship and…he drops the dog. The final scene of this tape is the camera facing the shaking, dying dog. I do not like this tape whatsoever, I like animals too much. I cried when I saw it so, animal lovers: CLOSE YOUR EYES AND EARS.
During watching the tapes, the woman who started watching shot herself. Her boyfriend (the other investigator) found her and continued to watch the tapes. He watches the student he is looking for shoot himself via a video on his mac. After shooting himself he runs off, and shortly after…the investigators had walked in. The mac was recording every minutes of tape watching they did. Dead girl wakes up and chases her boyfriend into a closet, very unsettling. He then shoots her, but after doing so he is then choked by this student. Now let me just tell you, this student is missing his jaw and his tongue is hanging down to his chest, it’s wonderful. He then takes the camera and gives it a thumbs up.
Overall, this movie is gross and entertaining. The makeup in the zombie tape could have been better, but overall…it was just the right amount of blood. The directors did a great job with this movie. One thing that is very overdone: the people recording every move they make. I get that, that is the basis of the movie but I am sick and tired of the “I need my camera everywhere I go. Oh! Now spooky shit is going to happen” thing. Like, if I start recording my every move with my phone will stuff magically start happening? It’s old now, there are very few movies that I like where they use this for their story…this is one of the ones I like.
